A Flying Visit to Hockenheimring

It was late September 2022 and we were plotting a route from Spa in Belgium to Stuttgart Germany when we started to pick up signs for the famous Hockenheimring.

Opened in 2019, the seventh worldwide Porsche Experience Centre sits tight to the fence line of the legendary track. Right in the thick of the action with a brilliant view of several corners of the grand prix circuit.

Inside the Porsche Experience Centre there is a lovely formal restaurant,  meeting and event spaces, and of course the all important coffee shop.

Upstairs we stumbled across a small display of very interesting Porsche cars.

A Porsche 911 RSR was also on display, still wearing its on-track debris!

This car was driven to win the GTE-Pro class of the 24 Hours of Le Mans by Richard Lietz, Gianmaria Bruni and Frédéric Makowiecki.

For us the most interesting model was this incredible Porsche 918 Test Mule

It was facinating to get very up close and have a good poke around this supercar in the making. Some of the parts were instantly recognisable from the wider Porsche parts bins such as the 911 Type 991 tail lights. Apparently this mule was based on the Carerra GT but with a 918 hybrid engine.

The flightcase fastened to the back with a ratchet strap was almost comical but it demonstrated how these amazing cars start life in the Porsche research centre in Weissach.

This visit was well worth the ten minute detour from the the autobahn.
